How to Create Your Own Spa Treatment

from wikiHow – The How to Manual That You Can Edit
There is nothing more relaxing and pampering than a wonderful DIY facial and home spa treatment. The DIY spa treatments most widely considered to be genuinely effective include facial steaming, facial peels, facial masks, microdermabrasion, and photorejuvenation facial lasers.

Steps

  1. Pick a good day that no one is going to be home so you can focus on yourself.
  2. Cleansing: First, start any DIY spa treatment with squeaky clean skin. Use a gentle cleanser, not soap, with warm water. Cleansers with a soy base are less irritating to the skin.
  3. Try some Facial Steaming: Facial steaming can be as simple as heating up water in a large bowl in the microwave or on the stove, draping a towel over your head and letting your skin absorb the steam for 5 minutes. For a rejuvenating steam add green tea and some herbs such as rosemary, thyme, or mint to the water. Facial steamers will open up the pores providing a deep cleansing by steaming out embedded dirt, as well as hydrates the skin.
  4. Toning: Tone skin with a stimulating toner rich in emollients and antioxidants.
  5. Facial Masks: Once a week, give yourself a skin enriching treatment with a moisturizing and hydrating facial mask. There are several OTC options or you can make your own mask using common ingredients such as avocado, banana, or aloe mixed with freshly squeezed citrus juice and a drizzle of olive or nut oil.
  6. Facial Peel: Once a week, try a stimulating facial peel with an OTC product that contains an alpha hydroxyl acid (AHA) or beta hydroxyl acid (BHA). You can also easily make your own using any fruit acid such as fresh grapefruit juice, add a few crushed plain aspirin, and one half packet of unflavored gelatin into one egg white stiffly whipped.
  7. Microdermabrasion: Once or twice a week, give your skin a microdermabrasion treatment which will get rid of dead skin cells and stimulate cell renewal. There are several types of microdermabrasion products to chose from which are all effective. Use an OTC microdermabrasion scrub, a microdermabrasion cloth or a hand held microdermabrasion scrubbing wand. Studies suggest that 5 to 6 home microdermabrasion treatments are equivalent to one professional spa microdermabrasion treatment!
  8. Check out the new Facial Laser Treatments: There are several different home facial laser devises to choose from including the ever popular derma wand, and the oxylight. The Baby Quasar or “Baby Q” is the newest facial laser to be introduced on the market and has been quite a hit. (It was originally designed to be sold as a professional spa photo rejuvenation treatment but was recently released to be sold to the home consumer). The current correlation is that 3 to 4 home facial laser treatments are equal to the results achieved from one professional IPL treatment.
  9. Do a Facial Wraps: A simple facial wrap can be achieved with either an OTC product or by soaking nori seaweed in warm vitamin water until soft and applying it on the skin for 15 minutes.
  10. Moisturize: After completing a DIY spa treatment with a moisturizer that is rich in emollients as well as a strong antioxidant as an active ingredient such as vitamin C or copper peptides. Hyaluronic acid, retinol, DMAE, and alpha lipoic acid are also excellent ingredients to look for in a moisturizing skin care treatment.
  11. Use Sunscreen: Last but not least always use sunscreen to protect your skin from sun damaging UV radiation or all your efforts on DIY spa treatments will simply be undone by overexposure to the sun.

Tips

  • Make it fun, not a chore! That way you will enjoy experimenting with DIY spa treatments and your skin will thank you for it by showing it’s vibrant, rosy baby soft side all the time.
  • Take your time because you have all day.
  • A spa is always better with a best girlfriend.
  • Relax as much as you can and don’t think about problems or anything all day.
  • Turn on calming music to create a better feeling of relaxation.
  • Scented candles are good for making people relax more.

Warnings

  • Always try a new product on a small patch of skin first to see if any reaction develops.
  • If making your own natural spa facial treatments, don’t use any ingredient that you are allergic to!
  • Don’t over do it! Facial skin is actually quite delicate and can become irritated quite easily.
  • Do NOT do both an AHA peel and Microdermabrasion. These are both very powerful exfoliants, and should not be used together (or within approximately three weeks). Choose one or the other, NOT BOTH.
  • mud mask
  • candles
  • manicure and pedicure supplies
  • a yoga video or yoga experience
  • soothing lotions and body washes (either both smelling the same or smelling bath wash/gel/salts and non scented lotion)

Qi Gong

March 11, 2010

How to Do a Qigong Self Healing Exercise | eHow.com.
Qigong (or ch’i kung) is an internal Chinese meditative practice which often uses slow graceful movements and controlled breathing techniques to promote the circulation of qi within the human body, and enhance a practitioner’s overall health.
460x80

There are also many forms of qigong that are done with little or no movement at all, in standing, sitting and supine positions; likewise, not all forms of qigong use breath control techniques.
In its simplest form, the Chinese character for qi, in qigong, can mean air, breath, or “life force”. Gong means work, so qigong is therefore the practice of “working” with ones “life force”.

Colon Cleanse

March 11, 2010

A variety of health problems exist today which can all be traced back to the colon; abdominal pain, discomfort, constipation, diarrhea and lack of energy. Bowel movements are the basis of our health. If we don’t have at least one bowel movement per day, we are already walking our way toward disease. These diseases even may lead to colon cancer. Therefore we require a regular cleanses of our colon, kidney, liver & gall bladder to keep our bodies healthy. A colon cleanse is the most important cleanse of all others.

Different Types of Colon Cleansing

The different methods of colon cleansing are 1) Colon Hydrotherapy, 2) Enemas, 3) Herbal supplements, 4) Laxatives and 5) Oxygen-based Cleansers. Here is a brief description about all these cleansing methods.

1) Colon Hydrotherapy: In this process of colon cleansing warm and filtered water is used to fuse into the colon via a plastic tube. With this method, only the large intestine can be cleansed. Colon hydrotherapy process is also termed as ‘colonic irrigation’ and ‘using colenemas.’

2) Enemas: The problem of constipation is being treated by this process of colon cleansing from many earlier centuries. The effectiveness of this treatment mainly depends on the type of enema used. Enemas are used to remove the waste material only from the lower part of the colon. Enemas are also useful in emptying the rectum. The different types of enemas are water enemas, coffee enemas, clay enemas, etc. Most people do not like inserting enemas through their rectal cavity.

3) Herbal supplements: Nowadays, different herbal supplements are available on the market in the form of pills or capsules. These herbal supplements are very inexpensive and are not fully effective in cleansing the bowel.

4) Laxatives: Like enemas these are also used as the temporary treatments of constipation. This treatment can be considered as the most dangerous treatment among all other colon cleansing methods as there may be serious dehydration and even loss of muscle round the colon lining.

5) Oxygen-based Cleansers: The best method among all the colon cleansing methods is the Oxygen-based Cleansers. In this process of colon cleansing the compacted matter can be melt away by oxidation reduction reaction. A good oxygen-based colon cleanser works in the whole system and can completely cleanse the entire intestinal tract and it also fully detoxifies the whole tract.

The Benefits of Colon Cleansing

- Prevents irregular bowel movements and constipation
- Helps to promote clearer skin
- Improvement in Concentration
- Absorb minerals and vitamins easier
- Colon cleansing also helps us from different fatal disease like colon cancer.

How to Celebrate Earth Day

March 4, 2010

Sierra Club

The celebration of Earth Day on April 22nd began in the United States in 1970 and was the brainchild of Senator Gaylord Nelson, who had long pondered about finding a way to “put the environment into the political ‘limelight’ once and for all”.This Day is now celebrated in most countries of the world. Earth Day is a perfect time to reflect about what you are doing to help protect the environment. There are many ways that you can celebrate alone and with others.

1.Plant trees. Planting trees helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, cleans pollution, secures soil in place to prevent erosion, and provides homes for a lot of biodiversity.
Get Your Backyard Ready For Spring With Birdhouses & Feeders From ShopNWF.org!

2.Make nature crafts at school or home. Get together with your family and build a birdhouse or make a bird feeder to encourage the local bird population, which plays an important role in every ecosystem. Use objects that would’ve otherwise been thrown away to create beautiful works of art…Here, the possibilities are endless:
Turn used guitar strings into a centerpiece,
make a basket from an old orange juice carton,
convert an old floppy disk into a Starship Enterprise,

3. Learn more about the environment. Earth Day is a good time to make a commitment to learning more about the environment and how you can help to protect it. Borrow some library books and read up on an issue such as pollution, endangered species, water shortages, recycling, and climate change. Or, learn about a region you’ve never considered before, like the Arctic, the deserts, or the rainforests. Think about the issues that concern you the most and if you haven’t done so already, join a local group that undertakes activities to help protect the environment in your area.

4. Reduce, reuse and recycle all day long. Buy as little as possible and avoid items that come in lots of packaging. Support local growers and producers of food and products – these don’t have to travel as far and so reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Take your drink container with you, and don’t use any disposable plates or cutlery. Recycle all the things you do use for the day or find other uses for things that you no longer use. Carry a cloth bag for carrying things in and recycle your plastic bags.
5. Get children to recycle their old toys and games. By giving their old toys and games to younger children who could make use of them, older children learn two lessons: One is about giving to others and the second is about reusing and recycling instead of throwing things away. Adults can also do this with clothes, electrical items, books and more. Learn about product exchange communities like Freecycle and other alternatives.
6.Get rid of litter from our roadways. Many groups use the weekend of Earth Day to clear roadways, highways and neighborhood streets of litter that has accumulated since the last clean-up day. Many companies donate gloves and bags for clean-up groups and villages organize bag pick ups. Once the group has collected the trash and placed the recycled bags along the road, get the village public works department to pick the bags up. It’s a wonderful community project. Great for scout troops, rotary clubs and the like.
7 . Sing or listen to “Earth” songs. There are many Earth Day song lyrics available on the Internet. Many follow well-known tunes. These make a fantastic classroom activity and help younger children to become interested in environmental topics. For listening, even iTunes has songs about the Earth for downloading: try searching for words such as “planet”, “Earth”, “endangered”, “pollution” etc.

8. Children’s environmental art on displayHold an Earth Day fair. Maybe your school, your street, your local neighborhood is interested in getting together to have an environmental fair. Things to have at the fair include demonstrations of environmentally-friendly products, children’s artwork, healthy/locally grown foods to eat, animal care demonstrations (including wildlife rescue), games for the children made of recycled products, musicians and actors performing environmental music and skits, stalls which are recycling unwanted treasures and books, local environmental organisations presenting their issues and wares. Money raised can go towards a local environmental restoration project or to an environmental group agreed upon by all the participants running the fair.

9. Earth Day presentationTeach others about the environment. Teachers, professionals, students, in fact anyone who cares about the environment and is willing to teach others, can all provide environmental lessons for others. Most schools already celebrate Earth Day in the classrooms with activities but there are many other ways you can teach about the environment. For example, give a speech at your local library on how to compost with worms; take a group of children down to the recycling center to show them how things are recycled; recite nature poems in the park; offer to teach your office colleagues how to make environmentally-friendly choices at work during one lunch hour. Everyone has environmental knowledge they can share with others.
Sierra Club

10. Wear green and/or brown. Dress in environmental colors for the day; think “tree”! Wear badges if you have them that carry pithy summaries of your environmental views.
11. Engage others in conversations about your environmental concerns. Don’t be bossy or pushy, just tell people some facts and then explain your feelings about them. Encourage them to respond and if they have no opinions or they seem to not know much, help them learn some more by imparting your environmental knowledge in a friendly and helpful manner.
12. Cook a special Earth Day meal. Plan a menu that uses locally produced foods, is healthy and has minimal impact on the environment. Favour vegetable and bean products, as these use less resources to grow than mass-farmed meat. If you still would like meat, look for locally produced, organic meat. Try and have organic food completely. Decorate the table with recycled decorations made by you and your friends.
13. Consider buying a carbon offset to make up for the greenhouse gas emissions you create on the other 364 days of the year. Carbon offsets fund reductions in greenhouse gas emissions through projects such as wind farms, that displaces energy from fossil fuels.
14. Ride your bike. Use your bicycle or other forms of human powered transportation to commute to work or school and to run errands.
15. Remember: Every day is Earth Day. Anything to help our environment is a perfect thing to do on Earth Day and every day. Don’t restrict yourself to just one day a year; learn about how you can make a difference to environmental protection all the time. And put it into practice – every day!

5 Foods to Avoid Eating

March 2, 2010

Imagine what it would be like if at age 65 you looked 40. Sure, it may seem like a dream, but the truth is that it can become a reality if you really want it to. The upside to wanting to live a healthier, longer life, and look good while doing it is that the ability to do so is entirely within your control. You get to decide what foods you eat, what foods you keep in your cupboards. You also get to decide how to prepare them. Will you prepare them healthy, or not so healthy? Living a healthy lifestyle is within your control, and the following is a list of bad foods to avoid which will help you obtain this lifestyle.

Bad Food to Avoid #1 Monosodium Glutamate

Read the content label on every package of food you buy from the store. If anything has this chemical in it, leave it on the shelf. You might also have heard this chemical called MSG. It can be detrimental to a healthy lifestyle because it tricks the brain into not feeling full. Thus, prompting you to eat more than you should.

Bad Food to Avoid #2 High Fructose Corn Syrup

For some people, this is the reason why they struggle to stay on a diet, especially if their former lifestyle included them ingesting a high content of this garbage. The reason it is difficult for people like this to stick to their diet is because high fructose corn syrup is addicting.

Bad Food to Avoid #3 Hydrogenated Oil

This type of oil contains Trans fats, which are known to cause heart disease, weight gain, high cholesterol, and numerous other medical problems. The quickest way to have a coronary is to eat foods high in Trans fats on a regular basis. If you have trouble doing this, then just picture how unattractive you’ll look after having such a major surgery to repair this problem.

Basic animated banner for Diet Book

Bad Food to Avoid #4 Sugar

Sugar is packed full of chemicals to help refine it into the substance it is once it finally reaches the grocery store. You should try to avoid it at all cost if possible. It doesn’t serve any other purpose than to turn to fat and become a bulge around your thighs and belly.

Bad Food to Avoid #5 Enriched White Flour

The word enriched doesn’t mean that healthy additives have been mixed in. It’s quite the opposite. There is absolutely no nutritional value whatsoever in this food. If your mother never let you eat white bread growing up, this is why. It is one of the main ingredients.

One of the best ways to make sure you’re buying healthy food when grocery shopping is to look at the contents on the outside of the package. If there is anything listed on it which you cannot pronounce, generally scientific words, put it back on the shelf and move along. That is, do this if you’re serious about living a long and healthy life, and looking good while doing so.
