Journey to Wellness (The beginning)

I get asked all the time where do I begin? International Women’s Day honours the work of the Suffragettes, celebrates women’s success, and reminds of inequities still to be redressed.

I believe their products are basic necessity for healthy living. We need good mineral rich salts to replenish our electrolytes and minerals. We need healthy, clean and energetic air in our homes and offices to help us feel good. We need non toxic hair and skin care as our skin is the largest organ. We need good nutritious oils, foods and cookware to feed our cells and our souls.
This is a beginning package to invite you to experience their high quality and effective products, if you need more recommendations, you can call them at anytime at 866-497-0274

Why Should I Become a Vegetarian ?

January 28, 2011

Living healthy requires maintaining a healthy diet. No diet may be healthier than meals dominated by fresh, all-natural vegetables and fruits.

don't eat meat

Meat is Murder

Lately, more and more people have shifted to vegetarian meals because scientific research demonstrated the adverse effects of animal meat.

Nutritionists explain that the high amount of animal fat present in meat, dairy, and other animal products may be probable factors leading to the onset of diabetes mellitus, obesity, colorectal cancer, high blood pressure, and coronary artery disease.

To avoid these diseases, nutritionists have long expounded on the health benefits of high intake of fruits and vegetables.

However, people generally have many misconceptions about vegetarianism or the practice of eating foods from the plant kingdom.

This article attempts to clear these misconceptions and bring to light what the said lifestyle is about.

Vegetarians may be classified into four groups. Vegans eat no animal foods, while semi-vegetarians generally avoid meat but consume poultry and selected animal foods.

Meanwhile, lacto-ovo-vegetarians avoid meat, poultry and fish, but take in milk and eggs. Finally, lacto-vegetarians consume milk products but not other animal foods. Some vegetarians also go as far as avoiding clothing made from animal products like fleece, fur, and leather.

More so, others avoid processed foods, alcoholic beverages, and foods bred with pesticides.

Historically, vegetarianism can be traced from philosophical beliefs, specifically religious traditions and teachings of Buddhism and Hinduism.

The said religions shun away from animal flesh due to their doctrine upholding self-denial, reincarnation, and the blessedness of all forms of life.

However, during the 19th century, the practice has transcended religious boundaries when the Vegetarian Society, a British non-religious organization, became famous in 1847.

Modern vegetarians uphold the rejection of meat in their campaign for animal welfare, labeling the killing of animals for consumption as a violation of their rights. The practice has already gained worldwide acceptance.

Some people contend that the vegetarian diet is insufficient in meeting the daily nutritional requirements. However, dieticians have explained that plant-based meals are low in cholesterol, saturated fat, and salt.

Likewise, plant-based meals may be planned in order to obtain the essential nutrients normally obtained from meat, fish, and poultry.

Vegetarians may consume diets dominated by fruits, vegetables, cereals and grains. In place of meat products, lacto-ovo-vegetarians may use nuts, lentils, eggs, nuts, peanut butter, dry beans, and peas. Vegetarians avoiding milk may find other sources of calcium and Vitamin D-enriched foods.

Also, vegans may have to take vitamin and mineral supplements to ensure adequate intakes of nutrients that may only be obtained from animal-based meals.

Consciousness on healthy living involves awareness on the different options and forms of vegetarianism. Here’s to a healthy lifestyle and well-being to all of us!

Supplementing is Vital

January 28, 2011

I have come to believe that nutritional supplements are vital for maintaining good health in the 21st Century. Studies have shown that the foods we eat today do not contain the same level of nutrients as the foods consumed 50 years ago. We need to eat more servings of fruits and vegetables today to get the same amount of nutrients that were in our produce grown 50 years ago.

supplements

supplements are vital

Doctors used to say that if you eat a healthy, well-balanced diet you will get all of the vitamins and minerals you need. The problem with our modern food supply is that it can no longer provide all of the nutrients we need. In 2002 the Journal of the American Medical Association recommended that it is prudent for all adults to take nutritional supplements.

There are many reasons why supplementation has become necessary. Crops today are harvested when they are still “green” (not fully ripened) so they can be shipped to the marketplace without spoiling. The fruits and vegetables in your grocery store may look fresh, but it’s likely that they are at least a few days old. (Some out-of-season fruits and vegetables may even be months old if they have been held in cold storage.) Studies have shown that fruits and vegetables begin to lose many if their nutrients when they are picked; the longer it has been since harvest, the more nutrients are lost.

Another reason is that the soil has become depleted of nutrients. Chemical fertilizers put back just enough to make the plants grow and to produce crops. The soils are not replenished with all of the nutrients that are lost.

Organic produce is definitely a better choice nutritionally. Studies have shown that organic produce does contain more nutrients than conventionally grown produce. That is probably because organic farmers understand the importance of healthy soil. They use methods besides chemical fertilizers to ensure the health of their soil and their crops. So you will receive more nutrients in organic produce.

What may be missing in any produce you buy, even organic, are the phytochemicals. These phytochemicals, or phytonutrients as they are also known, are not considered essential, but studies have shown that they are extremely beneficial. Many of the antioxidants that you may have been reading about are actually phytochemicals. What the magazine and newspaper articles don’t tell you is that phytochemicals do not develop in the plants unless the fruit or vegetable has been vine-ripened. They develop in the final stages of the ripening process. So unless you grow your own vine-ripened produce or get it from the farmer who picked it ripe today, you are not getting the benefits of phytochemicals from your food.

As for me, I’ll continue to search for the best quality, natural foods for myself and my family, but I will also make sure we have high-quality supplements to fill in the nutritional gaps. I believe these choices will help insure that I will continue to enjoy good health and the best quality of life as I age.

Flu and Cold Season Is Here : Boost your Immunity

November 11, 2010

Some people, it seems, are endowed with a healthy immune system. They never seem to get sick and, if they do get the odd cold, they continue their daily routine and snap out of it in no time flat. Then you see others who barely have to hear the word ‘flu or see someone blowing their nose and bam, they’ve got it!

cold and flu

cold and flu

Is it all in the head? Are you born with a strong immune system to fight off disease? Can you do something about it, if you’re not? Anyway, what does it mean to have immunity? Well, a very simple explanation is that there are basically two types: active and passive immunity.

The definition of ‘immune’ is that your body is so strong and resistant to any disease that you will not succumb to it.

Active immunity is considered to be long-lasting and tends to be life-long. If you’re in this category then, whenever you’re exposed to a disease organism, your immune system will instantly start to produce antibodies to that disease. Furthermore, if you should come into contact with that disease in the future, your immune system will identify it and immediately fight it off with the stored antibodies.

Passive immunity is not inherent in your system. It is when you cannot produce enough antibodies to fight off disease, and get an external boost by injection, medication or nutritional supplements.

Healthy people with an active, innate immunity are usually referred to as being resistant to disease in general. The term immunity is usually applied to general protection against a specific organism. Even if you are generally healthy, you may from time to time need a boost in order to help fight off a virulent strain of a specific infection or virus. The more severe the disease producing organism, the more the passive immunity is applied.

A good digestion and healthy appetite are indicators of a strong immunity. “Getting better quickly is a better indicator of immune health,” says Dr Dennis Alexander, head of molecular immunology at the Babraham institute in Cambridge.

Likewise, the body under stress, i.e. disease or sudden accident, is often not capable to fight off multiple vaccines in one shot.

Judging by the large numbers of people coping with disease, the human system is inherently fragile and cannot handle multiple onslaughts, like the ones discussed above.

Many believe that if you are generally healthy and look after your health, you will only have a mild version of what’s going around. “In truth, there’s no such thing as a normal immune system,” says Angus Dalgleish, professor of oncology at St George’s Hospital, London, who researches cancer vaccines. He says the system is naturally very variable.

The rise of allergies, auto-immune diseases (where the body attacks itself) and inflammatory bowel disease are all indicators of immune resistance performing under par.

Antigens help the acquired immune system recognize invading bacteria, viruses and other harmful organisms (pathogens).

Leftovers, non-organic foods, and foods laced with preservatives can severely tax the digestive system. This can, in turn, clog your circulation, and create a sluggish, compromised immune system.

Going to be late, working at night, irregular eating habits, sleeping during the day, and exposing the body to stress and fatigue can all affect the digestion and body rhythms and thus compromise your resistance.

Therefore, be good to yourself. Eating nutritiously and keeping an active, happy lifestyle will go a long way to boosting your immune system.

The definition of ‘immune’ is that your body is so strong and resistant to any disease that you will not succumb to it.

Packed with lessons and exercises, you will love this book and refer to it time and again as you progress in your Yoga education.
yoga
Lessons In Yoga Exercises is an illustrated guide to the common and popular physical aspect of Yoga . . . Hatha Yoga. Hatha Yoga is comprised of stretching, strengthening and breathing exercises in upright, lying down and inverted postures. This is the Yoga that has become the most popular in the west. Lessons In Yoga Exercises is the guide to attaining physical well-being.

yoga
Guide To Advanced Yoga Techniques provides a complete manual for the study and practice of Raja and Gnani Yoga. This book of timeless teachings is a treasure to be read and referred to again and again by those seeking the spiritual path. The classic Sutras cover the yogic teachings on ethics, meditation, and physical postures, and provide directions for dealing with situations in daily life.
Staying Young with Yoga
Yoga is perhaps one of the best exercises to get involved in if you
want to keep a beautiful body even
in old age. There are moves you can do, and even though they
may look easy, these modified standing yoga poses can be quite challenging. Balancing
helps improve posture, strengthen your core, and sharpen your focus. Breathe into
the pose and free yourself from worries. A focused mind and awareness to
the present are vital in performing these various balance poses. To start with, here
are simple moves to master:

The Leg Lift
For your initial pose, plant your left foot on the floor
and place your left hand on your left hip. Bend your right leg and gently hold your
right knee with your right hand. Keep this up for five full breaths. If you want to
take it up a notch, bring your bent leg to the side. Hold for another five breaths,
and then bring your leg to the front and place it back down on the floor. Repeat this
very same process with your other leg.

The Tree
For your starting pose, raise your right foot and place it on your left inner
thigh. Bring your hands to prayer position at your chest and hold for five
breaths, while keeping your balance. To take it up a notch and give
yourself a real challenge, extend both arms above your head while keeping your
prayer position. Make sure to keep your shoulders down and away from your ears, and
your chest lifted. Allow five full breaths once more, then lower your arms and bent
leg, and then switch sides.

One Foot with Extended Leg
To start with, place your hands on your hips and make sure your body is straight,
shoulder pulled down, and chest lifted. To up the ante and go a bit further, lift
your left leg, and concentrate on keeping the weight on your standing leg. If
this is too easy for you, bring your lifted leg higher. Hold for five breaths, then
repeat the process with the other leg.

There are also other things you can do. To help you get a sexier rear,
follow a smart diet, take a 30-minute daily walk or engage in some other cardio
exercise, and do a toning workout in the comfort of your very own home on a regular
basis. Of course, it also helps to gear up. When you’re working out and getting bored,
try bringing your mp3 player. Tune in to your favorite music, and exercising won’t
seem like any trouble at home. In fact, you may even look forward to your next workout
schedule. Be a workout genius with a sports sensor built into your shoes. This can
actually be your own personal gym DJ. The sensor tracks how you run, so it can also
choose the songs to match your pace. This mini-trainer also gives you the proper
feedback in the form of time, distance, pace, and calories burned, during and after
you run. Having all these in your gym bag could actually make exercise seem like
playtime.

AMAZING Exercise Program for HUGE results

November 3, 2010

Discover How You Can Burn MORE Than 1,000 Calories EVERY Workout, Diet ONLY Three Days Each Week, And Consistently Melt Away Up to FIVE Pounds Of Pure Fat EVERY 7 Days… Every Once in a while , a new innovative program comes along that actually shows amazing results. This is that Program. IF you click on my link here, you can get the whole package for 29.95 – seriously . I would grab it now though because once this catches on it will be worth a lot more.
Even if you’re a relative beginner, in 4 weeks or less this program will take you from you entry level 300 calorie workouts to burning a whopping 1,000+ calories with the fastest fat loss progression system EVER developed – R-Quattro™ Technology and S² Progression.

What is R-Quattro™ Technology?

Essentially, the entire structure of the 1,000 Calorie Challenge program was specifically designed to progress you along the calorie continuum as fast as humanly possible so that in a matter of just a few short weeks you’ll be performing full-blown 1,000 calorie workouts that burn massive calories and lead to massive fat loss.

And R-Quattro™ technology is a major contributor to making that possible.

With R-Quattro™ we strategically manipulate four training variables to tackle progressive overload from four unique angles.

1. Reps – the number of repetitions performed for each exercise
2. Resistance – the load used for each exercise
3. Rest – the length of rest periods between exercises and rounds
4. Rounds – the number of times a circuit of exercises is completed

The end result is the fastest possible progression toward the 1,000 calorie goal, and a heaping helping of fat loss results with each and every workout to boot.

Here’s a quick rundown of how R-Quattro™ is implemented in to the weekly set-up of the 1,000 Calorie Challenge program:

Monday: Baseline workout
Wednesday: Reps and Resistance are increased
Friday: Rest decreases, Rounds are increased

The first workout is always the baseline. Then every workout (Workout 2 and 3 of each week) thereafter gets even more challenging (and subsequently burns more calories and fat) by manipulating R-Quattro™.

1000 calorie challenge

But let me warn you, if you are LAZY and are simply looking for a “magic bullet” solution, this is not the program for you.

The simple fact of the matter is this: the 1,000 Calorie Challenge is NOT a “quick fix.” It’s a SMART fix to a very complex problem that consequently yields the fastest fat loss imaginable.

Oh, and did we mention that you’ll probably even GAIN a couple pounds of firm, calorie-burning lean muscle while you lose fat at record speed? That’s unheard of. But the reality is that we’ve had clients do it over and over again with this program.

At the same time, we want to make sure we’re being very clear: make no mistake, this program takes work, and if you’re one of these people who simply can’t fully dedicate 8 short weeks to radically changing their body—a change that you will be able to enjoy for the rest of your LIFE—then please, do not invest in this system.

But for those of you who are serious, those who are ready to put for the effort, the 1,000 Calorie Challenge will absolutely yield faster fat loss than anything else you’ve ever experienced—GUARANTEED.

Naturally Skinsational. . .

“…provides consumers with an effective, reasonably-priced and natural alternative to treat the needs of aging skin in contrast to the often expensive retail products with commercial grade ingredients available on store shelves.”

This book is an absolute treasure!

Sue Dolan’s knowledge of ingredients to use for rejuvenating the skin is impressive and her recipes for everything from facial masks to moisturizers to facial cleansers with ingredients readily available to anyone is fascinating.

And they work!

The recipe ebook is chock full of recipes and skin care tips. In addition, the book is charming and delightful to read and occasionally whimsical. A recipe for a facial mask for a special occasion, in this particular case Halloween, is entitled “Witches Brew,” and, among other things, calls for “10 of your best dragon tears, (fresh cranberries can be substituted if necessary”!)

I love it!

I find the recipes fun and easy to make and, more importantly, they save a great deal of money: instead of buying expensive products, I make them myself!

I’m in love with this recipe ebook!

When you skillfully learn to handle your stress, not only does your stress level go down, but your quality of life “goes up.” The skills you are learning in 8 Minute Meditation Stress Reduction Program have a global impact.

Just think about it: If you lower your stress, you feel calmer. Your heart rate is normal, your digestive and other systems are working normally, the way they were designed to. Your entire body and mind are in harmony, functioning to give you the most aware, joyful experience you can have. There’s nothing in the way. Then, the world may appear totally different. Colors may seem more vivid. Your shoulders seem lighter, like some great burden has been lifted from them. Life is just “good” again.

Too Much Protein??

September 14, 2010

Don’t sacrifice your carbohydrates for a high protein diet, and think twice before “bulking up” those biceps with protein to look better at the gym. Your daily diet shouldn’t contain more than 30% protein ideally, because an excess of it will do you more harm than good. So says Gail Butterfield, Ph.D., director of Nutrition Studies at the Palo Alto Veterans Administration Medical Center.
protein sources
Dr. Butterfield says that excess protein in your diet may have harmful effects. If you increase protein without adding more calories and exercise to your daily life, instead of building muscle mass you will put your other body systems under undue stress. And eating more protein while increasing calorie intake — but keeping at the same exercise levels — builds an equal amount of additional fat and muscle. Meanwhile, a diet where protein is more than 30% of your calorie intake causes a buildup of toxic ketones. A “ketogenic” diet, or one high in ketones, pushes your kidneys to excessively flush themselves free of toxins. This can cause you to lose a significant amount of water, which puts you at serious risk of dehydration, especially if you exercise heavily during your workouts.

Such water loss will make it appear you’re losing weight, when in actuality you’re not. Plus you will be losing, not gaining, muscle mass and bone calcium from this ketogenic diet, while the stress of dehydration can also badly affect your heart. Dehydration from a ketogenic diet can make you dizzy and weak, give you bad breath, and lead to other health-related problems. This can be the result of a high-protein, low-carb “fad” diet – one that emphasizes proteins excessively.

Actual protein deficiency is a very rare condition and is confined usually to elderly women or persons with eating disorders. Protein deficiency is defined as eating 50-75% of the recommended daily amount of protein. You should consume 0.36 grams of protein for every pound of your normal body weight, according to the US recommended daily allowance — or RDA — guides. And protein should make up about 15% of your daily caloric intake, not go well over 30% of it.

Protein is absolutely required for your body’s normal functioning, as it helps synthesize your enzymes and hormones. It maintains your fluid balance and the building of antibodies against infections. It also is the basic building block for your muscles, bones, cartilage, skin, hair and blood, and is essential for the formation of all of the cells in your body You should eat protein-rich foods such as meat, cheese, milk, fish and eggs to get enough protein in your daily diet. You can also find protein in soy products, as well as in combinations of food such as rice or corn with beans, when it comes to vegetable proteins that you may consume.

You should eat a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meats, fish and complex carbohydrates, not one heavy in protein alone. But protein is optimal for immune functioning, and you may need heavier amounts of it when injured or otherwise undergoing any serious healing processes.

Proteins are made up of several different amino acids, some of which your body can make on its own. But some of them have to be ingested. These are called the “essential” amino acids. You must eat a variety of foods to make sure you’re getting all of your essential amino acids. Lack of these can cause growth failure, loss of muscle mass, decreased immune system functioning, weakening of the circulatory and respiratory systems – and even death.

The most common source of protein in the American diet is meat, but milk and other dairy products are rich in it. To avoid too much fat with your protein, eat leaner cuts of meat, and cook without adding fat by baking, broiling, barbecuing or boiling your meat. By eating beans and lentils as well as a variety of vegetables and grains, you can add terrific sources of vegetable protein to your diet. Nuts and seeds are also great sources of non-animal protein.

The average adult American needs eight grams of protein each day per twenty pounds of normal body weight. Yet we generally eat twice that much protein daily. If you balance your carbohydrates with your proteins, and eat a variety of foods to make sure you get all of the amino acids you need, you will be eating a healthy diet. You should also make sure you keep your diet low in fats, oils and refined sugars. Those substances have no proteins, and hardly any other nutrients, with one gram containing nine calories of energy. You do need some saturated and unsaturated fats in your food, every day. Unfortunately, “junk food” laden American eating habits tend to provide far too much of these fats.

Your daily diet should contain no more than 30% total calories from fats, hopefully far less than that. The upper limit on the amount of fat in your diet will depend on how many calories you need to maintain your weight, and cutting back on fat can help you consume fewer calories. But some dietary fat is needed for good health. It supplies energy and the essential fatty acids, which like the essential amino acids can only be gleaned from your consumption of certain foods. Fats also promote absorption of the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K.

High levels of saturated fat and cholesterol are linked to increased blood cholesterol and put you at risk for heart disease. Fat is also associated with protein-rich food such as meat and dairy products. So you should lower the daily amount of protein and fat that you consume to an acceptable level, while raising the amount of complex carbohydrates you consume to at least 50% of your daily calorie intake. This will ensure that you are eating a proper and not a “fad” -- or risky to your health – diet every day. Eating meals and snacks rich in whole grains, fruits and vegetables, as well as some high protein and certain “fatty” foods, will help you to obtain your desired weight and to keep fit -- not fat.

Heath Benefits Of Pomegranates.

June 9, 2010

The latest hot super fruit that has been found to be beneficial to life and health as we know it are “pomegranates,” those awkward little chaps with a brown leathery skin yet inside, packed with little red jewels.

It was these that gave rise to the pomegranates common name, from the French grenade because the seeds looked like the filling of a hand grenade known in Persia since
ancient times. Some scholars think that it may have been the pomegranate that Eve ate instead of the apple and it as been revered in many different
cultures since then, both as a symbol and as a medicine.

pomegranate

Now the anti-oxidant searchlight has hit the pomegranate and the research is
coming in fast and furious, although it must be noted that some research is
being funded by the producers of pomegranate juice.

Whilst the provisional results are impressive there is still a lot more to be done before the verdict is absolutely conclusive. For example, it is said that the main ingredient of the pressed juice is ellagic acid which is unable to be assimilated by the body. There are others that say it is not known if there is a substance within the juice that is the magic bullet or if there are other constituents that cause the amazing effects.
We do know that pomegranates are rich in flavenoids and polyphenols, higher than tomatoes, green tea or red wine and absolutely bursting with vitamin C as well as other important vitamins.

So far there is evidence from the University of California that drinking 8ozs of pomegranate juice per day significantly cuts down the effects of prostate cancer in men. It is not known if there was a control of men drinking 8ozs of any other juice, but the pomegranate drinkers did display very good beneficial effects.

From Israel comes the research that a daily glass of pomegranate juice can reduce the levels of LDL which is the “bad” cholesterol whose fat clogs up the arteries which then leads to hart disease.

From Case Western Reserve University comes the news that pomegranates have had a significant effect on interleukin-1b which is an inflammatory chemical associated with arthritis. It also had a beneficial counter effect on certain enzymes that are responsible for the destruction of cartilage in the body, which is the material vital for allowing the bones to interact with each other. Although this is a preliminary study and has only been carried out on materials in a laboratory and not on an actual person, indications are promising.

All in all it would appear that a daily dose of pomegranate juice is going to be beneficial to your health. Some people must think so as sales in one supermarket chain in England have jumped by 300% and unless you have a particular medical condition where you are taking prescribed medication, it may be better to swap it for your orange juice in the morning.

Afterglow Cosmetics, Inc

There are other ways to enjoy pomegranates, such as sprinkling fresh pomegranate on your breakfast cereal or using in a salad. Although it sounds good and tastes great, taking pomegranate vodka or tequila is not really a health option!

Happiness Tools

April 6, 2010

Exercise

Endorphins are hormones that are chemically related to the drug morphine! When you exercise regularly and for a prolonged period of time, endorphins are secreted by the pituitary gland. These hormones are known to block pain, decrease appetite, decrease anxiety and induce feelings of euphoria. In a recent article on YogaJournal.com, Dr. Timothy McCall states, Shambhala Publications Inc.
“Studies have found that it (yoga) reduces levels of cortisol (a stress hormone that’s also secreted by the adrenals), which is often elevated in people with the disease (depression). And astudy in India found that a Yoga program that included asana, pranayama (breathing exercises), and meditation raised levels of serotonin and lowered levels of monoamine oxidase – two neurochemicals involved in depression. ” There are several types of Yoga. Some are more focused on raw exercise, whereas some are more meditative in nature. The five points of Yoga, according to the International Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centres, include proper exercise, proper breathing, proper relaxation, proper diet, and finally, positive thinking and meditation. Thatshould be enough proof for you. Get out your Yoga mat. Go jogging. Dance. Or just breathe!

Get a Massage

Massage helps the energy flow through the body and eliminates toxins, decreasing stress, anxiety and symptoms of depression. Touch is soooo healing. Why? Because it helps the body release many mood enhancing chemicals such as dopamine and serotonin and reduces the stress hormone cortisol and adrenaline. It alsoincreases endorphin levels, which helps alleviate pain. Massage lowers noradrenaline and lowers the stress hormone ACTH (adrenocorticotrophic hormone), boosts the immune system, stabilizes blood sugar levels, improves lung function andpeak air flow, and is something YOU SHOULD BE DOING ONCE OR TWICE WEEKLY. This is health care right here, at your fingertips. If you don’t like people touching you, which is quite common, then try a Thai Massage – you are fully clothed for this one, but it will still have your serotonin flowing like a river!

Meditate and Do Inner Work

There is so much more to you than meets the eye. Half of your reactions to things are due to childhood programming. Some of this programming is healthy and some of it is not. Sometimes depression can be a symptom of deeply embedded negative childhood beliefs that you don’t even know you have. Self-knowledge and self-awareness are key to freedom from depressionin this case. While you will always have good and bad days, the more we know ourselves, the more we are free to make positivechoices in our lives. Meditation is key, and spending quiet time monitoring your feelings and just observing them is a wonderful way to understand the way you think. Once you dothat, you can change it. You just might change your very perception.

Eat for Happiness

You are what you eat, what you breathe, what you think, what you do. It makes sense that what you put into your body you then put out. So filling yourself up with empty calories may besatisfying at the time, but it will be like a quick, meaningless fling. If you take a look at the foods being hailed as “super foods,” it becomes evident that you can change your mental outlook by changing your diet. The body and mind are interconnected. Among other benefits, foods such as beans, berries, broccoli, salmon, soy and spinach, for example, help boost brain power and immunity.

Aromatherapy

This is a great natural mood enhancer. Not just a nice-smelling candle here or there, but using true essential oils in combination with massage. Fragrance molecules move from the skin into the bloodstream due to the fat-soluble nature of the oils. Sensors at the back of the nostrils then translate the information for the neurons in the brain. Essential oils remain in the body for four to 24 hours before being eliminated through the lungs and kidneys. Since the oils are natural, they leave behind no toxicity. It’s obvious that massage feels great, but a new study in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that a 20-minute evening back massage, when done with pain meds, not only relieves pain, but also reduces anxiety for post-operative patients. Uplifting aromas include sandalwood, ylang-ylang, bergamot, jasmine, lavender, geranium, rose and peppermint.

Color Therapy

Color therapy is a holistic therapy, thousands of years old dating back to Egypt, China and India. This is how it works: Color, being a form of light, is also a form of energy. Color therapy utilizes the vibrations to balance the body’s energy centers and to stimulate the body’s healing process. The energy relating to each of the seven spectrum colors (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet) resonates with the energy of each of the seven main chakras/energy centers of thebody. Happy colors include pink (for the heart, to evoke love) and green (also for the heart, for growth and creativity) and red for passion (the root color) – so long as your depression isn’t combined with anger!

Talk. Talk. Talk.

Taking time for oneself is yet another effective means for discovering happiness. Try setting aside an hour each week to bounce thoughts off an independent person, an expert listener with no direct ties to your life. Psychotherapy is a popular option for those who desire an impartial sounding board. A psychotherapist’s job is not to tell a patient what to do, but rather to direct the conversation, in a non-judgmental way, so that the patient remains focused on bettering him or herself.

Acupuncture

Another treatment for depression, acupuncture, has been proven to increase serotonin and endorphin levels, and recommended for use with Chinese Herbal Medicine. The herbs work at a root level – addressing disharmony within the body. When combined with Chinese Herbal Supplements, acupuncture has been known to evoke a smile or two!

Get your vitamin D

The sun gets a bad wrap… but, taking sunlight exposure away causes problems of its own. Depression being one of them. Sunlight provides people with the much needed nutrient, Vitamin D. Feeling like your not seeing the light? Increasing your ingested Vitamin D will do the trick. The Institute of medicine recommends 200 IU (international units) of Vitamin D a day forpeople up to 50 years old. 400 IU for people between 51-70 and about 600 IU for people over 70. Foods rich in Vitamin D include milk, salmon, Vitamin D fortified orange juice.

Herbal Supplements

If you are down in the dumps, then combine herbal remedies with your daily meditation, Yoga practice, healthy diet and walks in the park. These whole food supplements are non-addictiveand yet have been used for centuries to uplift your perspective. Obviously, if you are on medication, check with your doctor, but whole food herbs are exactly that, dried leaves and roots, so they are a very natural supplement.

Keeping Perspective

Ever been on an airplane and looked down through the tiny window to the planet below? Everything looked small and certainly of less consequence than when you are on the ground, right? Well, communing with nature is based on the same principal. Trees, mountains, oceans, flowers, and beautiful sunsets—these free gifts are waiting for you. Enjoy them. And, in order to enjoy these gifts, all you have to do is be alive and open to them. After all, we are not here to spend all our time bottled-up inside, hunched over a computer keyboard.

It’s all about love, love, love.

Love what you do, who you are, and whom you are with. Relationships are key to happiness. This is why it can be very traumatic when you move to a location where you don’t know anyone. Some people deal with this well, but others find this isolation too much to bear and become depressed. Therefore, if you are relocating, go out of your way to meet people and reach out to them.

Make your happiness a priority.

Perhaps it sounds selfish, but actually it is the most generous thing you can do for the world. When you’re less than happy and you can’t give of yourself, then you aren’t serving anyone, evenyourself. On the other hand, if you feel good, you can give of yourself and express yourself in the world. From happiness springs generosity and all those other virtuous qualities we know we should have, but often don’t. So start by being generous with yourself. Allow yourself to do what you want (go hiking for the weekend, buy new clothes, go for that full-day spa retreat…) and ask for what it is you want from others. Askyourself daily, “What do I want?” and wait for an epiphany. Then go get it. After all, happiness is just a muscle. Work it out.

This online web store seriously offers everything my website is trying to convey. I advise my readers to at least visit this site. If you are serious about feeling the best you possibly can you will not be disappointed. Kymm.

How To Eat More Fruits and Vegetables

April 1, 2010

Fruits and vegetables are an important part of a healthy eating plan. But is getting enough sometimes a challenge? Not any more.
Almost all fruits and vegetables are low in the things you don’t want (like sodium, calories and fat) but still pack a powerful punch of nutrients, vitamins and fibre. Even if you have picky eaters to feed, these seven sure-fire tips will help you add more of the good stuff to your meals and snacks without even trying.

1.Try something new. If you’re bored with your fruits and veggies, chances are you’re not getting enough variety. Next time you go grocery shopping, try fruits or vegetables you’ve never had before; for example, papaya, lychee, guava, bamboo shoots and rapini.
2.Save time with frozen or canned. While fresh is best, canned or frozen fruits and vegetables are good alternatives. Be sure you have some handy for when you’re short on time. And while they have about the same nutritional value as fresh, check the label to ensure that there’s no sugar or syrup added (for canned fruits) and that veggies have no salt added.
3.Soup it up! Soups are a great way to get more veggies into your diet . Puree squash, broccoli, carrots, peppers — or just about any vegetable you can think of — and add them to your favourite soup recipe. But don’t stop there: Find and try recipes for fruity soups that use melon or apple.
4.Add zing to tomato sauce or chili. Another way to get more vegetables into the mouths of picky eaters is by grating carrots, broccoli, mushrooms or zucchini into their favourite tomato sauce or chili. Chances are they won’t even notice. But even if you’re not trying to sneak them in, adding vegetables to homemade or store-bought sauce will add flavour and nutrients.
5.Keep healthy snacks within reach. Keep a bowl of fresh fruit, fruit salad, cut up veggies or pre-packaged baby carrots, snow peas or celery sticks on the most visible shelf in your refrigerator. The next time you or a family member heads to the fridge for munchies, you’ll have a no-fuss, no-mess snack waiting.
6.Mix ‘em up. Choosing fruits and vegetables of different colours is a good way to reduce your risk of cancer, heart disease and stroke. So mix up dark green, orange and red items to make a colourful salad. But don’t be afraid to mix fruits with vegetables; for example, try a spinach salad with orange slices and strawberries.
7.Keep it smooth and tasty. Get one or two servings of fruit early in the day by having a smoothie for breakfast. You can use just about any fruit you want for a fast and easy way to start the day. The Dietitians of Canada recommend you whirl up the following in a blender:
125 ml of milk or orange juice
175 ml of flavoured yogurt
125 ml of fruit (whatever you have on hand)
You can also add a few ice cubes or use frozen fruit. Enjoy!

How to Create Your Own Spa Treatment

from wikiHow – The How to Manual That You Can Edit
There is nothing more relaxing and pampering than a wonderful DIY facial and home spa treatment. The DIY spa treatments most widely considered to be genuinely effective include facial steaming, facial peels, facial masks, microdermabrasion, and photorejuvenation facial lasers.

Steps

  1. Pick a good day that no one is going to be home so you can focus on yourself.
  2. Cleansing: First, start any DIY spa treatment with squeaky clean skin. Use a gentle cleanser, not soap, with warm water. Cleansers with a soy base are less irritating to the skin.
  3. Try some Facial Steaming: Facial steaming can be as simple as heating up water in a large bowl in the microwave or on the stove, draping a towel over your head and letting your skin absorb the steam for 5 minutes. For a rejuvenating steam add green tea and some herbs such as rosemary, thyme, or mint to the water. Facial steamers will open up the pores providing a deep cleansing by steaming out embedded dirt, as well as hydrates the skin.
  4. Toning: Tone skin with a stimulating toner rich in emollients and antioxidants.
  5. Facial Masks: Once a week, give yourself a skin enriching treatment with a moisturizing and hydrating facial mask. There are several OTC options or you can make your own mask using common ingredients such as avocado, banana, or aloe mixed with freshly squeezed citrus juice and a drizzle of olive or nut oil.
  6. Facial Peel: Once a week, try a stimulating facial peel with an OTC product that contains an alpha hydroxyl acid (AHA) or beta hydroxyl acid (BHA). You can also easily make your own using any fruit acid such as fresh grapefruit juice, add a few crushed plain aspirin, and one half packet of unflavored gelatin into one egg white stiffly whipped.
  7. Microdermabrasion: Once or twice a week, give your skin a microdermabrasion treatment which will get rid of dead skin cells and stimulate cell renewal. There are several types of microdermabrasion products to chose from which are all effective. Use an OTC microdermabrasion scrub, a microdermabrasion cloth or a hand held microdermabrasion scrubbing wand. Studies suggest that 5 to 6 home microdermabrasion treatments are equivalent to one professional spa microdermabrasion treatment!
  8. Check out the new Facial Laser Treatments: There are several different home facial laser devises to choose from including the ever popular derma wand, and the oxylight. The Baby Quasar or “Baby Q” is the newest facial laser to be introduced on the market and has been quite a hit. (It was originally designed to be sold as a professional spa photo rejuvenation treatment but was recently released to be sold to the home consumer). The current correlation is that 3 to 4 home facial laser treatments are equal to the results achieved from one professional IPL treatment.
  9. Do a Facial Wraps: A simple facial wrap can be achieved with either an OTC product or by soaking nori seaweed in warm vitamin water until soft and applying it on the skin for 15 minutes.
  10. Moisturize: After completing a DIY spa treatment with a moisturizer that is rich in emollients as well as a strong antioxidant as an active ingredient such as vitamin C or copper peptides. Hyaluronic acid, retinol, DMAE, and alpha lipoic acid are also excellent ingredients to look for in a moisturizing skin care treatment.
  11. Use Sunscreen: Last but not least always use sunscreen to protect your skin from sun damaging UV radiation or all your efforts on DIY spa treatments will simply be undone by overexposure to the sun.

Tips

  • Make it fun, not a chore! That way you will enjoy experimenting with DIY spa treatments and your skin will thank you for it by showing it’s vibrant, rosy baby soft side all the time.
  • Take your time because you have all day.
  • A spa is always better with a best girlfriend.
  • Relax as much as you can and don’t think about problems or anything all day.
  • Turn on calming music to create a better feeling of relaxation.
  • Scented candles are good for making people relax more.

Warnings

  • Always try a new product on a small patch of skin first to see if any reaction develops.
  • If making your own natural spa facial treatments, don’t use any ingredient that you are allergic to!
  • Don’t over do it! Facial skin is actually quite delicate and can become irritated quite easily.
  • Do NOT do both an AHA peel and Microdermabrasion. These are both very powerful exfoliants, and should not be used together (or within approximately three weeks). Choose one or the other, NOT BOTH.
  • mud mask
  • candles
  • manicure and pedicure supplies
  • a yoga video or yoga experience
  • soothing lotions and body washes (either both smelling the same or smelling bath wash/gel/salts and non scented lotion)

Qi Gong

How to Do a Qigong Self Healing Exercise | eHow.com.
Qigong (or ch’i kung) is an internal Chinese meditative practice which often uses slow graceful movements and controlled breathing techniques to promote the circulation of qi within the human body, and enhance a practitioner’s overall health.
460x80

There are also many forms of qigong that are done with little or no movement at all, in standing, sitting and supine positions; likewise, not all forms of qigong use breath control techniques.
In its simplest form, the Chinese character for qi, in qigong, can mean air, breath, or “life force”. Gong means work, so qigong is therefore the practice of “working” with ones “life force”.

Colon Cleanse

March 11, 2010

A variety of health problems exist today which can all be traced back to the colon; abdominal pain, discomfort, constipation, diarrhea and lack of energy. Bowel movements are the basis of our health. If we don’t have at least one bowel movement per day, we are already walking our way toward disease. These diseases even may lead to colon cancer. Therefore we require a regular cleanses of our colon, kidney, liver & gall bladder to keep our bodies healthy. A colon cleanse is the most important cleanse of all others.

Different Types of Colon Cleansing

The different methods of colon cleansing are 1) Colon Hydrotherapy, 2) Enemas, 3) Herbal supplements, 4) Laxatives and 5) Oxygen-based Cleansers. Here is a brief description about all these cleansing methods.

1) Colon Hydrotherapy: In this process of colon cleansing warm and filtered water is used to fuse into the colon via a plastic tube. With this method, only the large intestine can be cleansed. Colon hydrotherapy process is also termed as ‘colonic irrigation’ and ‘using colenemas.’

2) Enemas: The problem of constipation is being treated by this process of colon cleansing from many earlier centuries. The effectiveness of this treatment mainly depends on the type of enema used. Enemas are used to remove the waste material only from the lower part of the colon. Enemas are also useful in emptying the rectum. The different types of enemas are water enemas, coffee enemas, clay enemas, etc. Most people do not like inserting enemas through their rectal cavity.

3) Herbal supplements: Nowadays, different herbal supplements are available on the market in the form of pills or capsules. These herbal supplements are very inexpensive and are not fully effective in cleansing the bowel.

4) Laxatives: Like enemas these are also used as the temporary treatments of constipation. This treatment can be considered as the most dangerous treatment among all other colon cleansing methods as there may be serious dehydration and even loss of muscle round the colon lining.

How to Celebrate Earth Day

March 4, 2010

Sierra Club

The celebration of Earth Day on April 22nd began in the United States in 1970 and was the brainchild of Senator Gaylord Nelson, who had long pondered about finding a way to “put the environment into the political ‘limelight’ once and for all”.This Day is now celebrated in most countries of the world. Earth Day is a perfect time to reflect about what you are doing to help protect the environment. There are many ways that you can celebrate alone and with others.

1.Plant trees. Planting trees helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, cleans pollution, secures soil in place to prevent erosion, and provides homes for a lot of biodiversity.

2.Make nature crafts at school or home. Get together with your family and build a birdhouse or make a bird feeder to encourage the local bird population, which plays an important role in every ecosystem. Use objects that would’ve otherwise been thrown away to create beautiful works of art…Here, the possibilities are endless:
Turn used guitar strings into a centerpiece,
make a basket from an old orange juice carton,
convert an old floppy disk into a Starship Enterprise,

3. Learn more about the environment. Earth Day is a good time to make a commitment to learning more about the environment and how you can help to protect it. Borrow some library books and read up on an issue such as pollution, endangered species, water shortages, recycling, and climate change. Or, learn about a region you’ve never considered before, like the Arctic, the deserts, or the rainforests. Think about the issues that concern you the most and if you haven’t done so already, join a local group that undertakes activities to help protect the environment in your area.

4. Reduce, reuse and recycle all day long. Buy as little as possible and avoid items that come in lots of packaging. Support local growers and producers of food and products – these don’t have to travel as far and so reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Take your drink container with you, and don’t use any disposable plates or cutlery. Recycle all the things you do use for the day or find other uses for things that you no longer use. Carry a cloth bag for carrying things in and recycle your plastic bags.
5. Get children to recycle their old toys and games. By giving their old toys and games to younger children who could make use of them, older children learn two lessons: One is about giving to others and the second is about reusing and recycling instead of throwing things away. Adults can also do this with clothes, electrical items, books and more. Learn about product exchange communities like Freecycle and other alternatives.
6.Get rid of litter from our roadways. Many groups use the weekend of Earth Day to clear roadways, highways and neighborhood streets of litter that has accumulated since the last clean-up day. Many companies donate gloves and bags for clean-up groups and villages organize bag pick ups. Once the group has collected the trash and placed the recycled bags along the road, get the village public works department to pick the bags up. It’s a wonderful community project. Great for scout troops, rotary clubs and the like.
7 . Sing or listen to “Earth” songs. There are many Earth Day song lyrics available on the Internet. Many follow well-known tunes. These make a fantastic classroom activity and help younger children to become interested in environmental topics. For listening, even iTunes has songs about the Earth for downloading: try searching for words such as “planet”, “Earth”, “endangered”, “pollution” etc.

8. Children’s environmental art on displayHold an Earth Day fair. Maybe your school, your street, your local neighborhood is interested in getting together to have an environmental fair. Things to have at the fair include demonstrations of environmentally-friendly products, children’s artwork, healthy/locally grown foods to eat, animal care demonstrations (including wildlife rescue), games for the children made of recycled products, musicians and actors performing environmental music and skits, stalls which are recycling unwanted treasures and books, local environmental organisations presenting their issues and wares. Money raised can go towards a local environmental restoration project or to an environmental group agreed upon by all the participants running the fair.

9. Earth Day presentationTeach others about the environment. Teachers, professionals, students, in fact anyone who cares about the environment and is willing to teach others, can all provide environmental lessons for others. Most schools already celebrate Earth Day in the classrooms with activities but there are many other ways you can teach about the environment. For example, give a speech at your local library on how to compost with worms; take a group of children down to the recycling center to show them how things are recycled; recite nature poems in the park; offer to teach your office colleagues how to make environmentally-friendly choices at work during one lunch hour. Everyone has environmental knowledge they can share with others.

10. Wear green and/or brown. Dress in environmental colors for the day; think “tree”! Wear badges if you have them that carry pithy summaries of your environmental views.
11. Engage others in conversations about your environmental concerns. Don’t be bossy or pushy, just tell people some facts and then explain your feelings about them. Encourage them to respond and if they have no opinions or they seem to not know much, help them learn some more by imparting your environmental knowledge in a friendly and helpful manner.
12. Cook a special Earth Day meal. Plan a menu that uses locally produced foods, is healthy and has minimal impact on the environment. Favour vegetable and bean products, as these use less resources to grow than mass-farmed meat. If you still would like meat, look for locally produced, organic meat. Try and have organic food completely. Decorate the table with recycled decorations made by you and your friends.
13. Consider buying a carbon offset to make up for the greenhouse gas emissions you create on the other 364 days of the year. Carbon offsets fund reductions in greenhouse gas emissions through projects such as wind farms, that displaces energy from fossil fuels.
14. Ride your bike. Use your bicycle or other forms of human powered transportation to commute to work or school and to run errands.
15. Remember: Every day is Earth Day. Anything to help our environment is a perfect thing to do on Earth Day and every day. Don’t restrict yourself to just one day a year; learn about how you can make a difference to environmental protection all the time. And put it into practice – every day!

5 Foods to Avoid Eating

March 2, 2010

Imagine what it would be like if at age 65 you looked 40. Sure, it may seem like a dream, but the truth is that it can become a reality if you really want it to. The upside to wanting to live a healthier, longer life, and look good while doing it is that the ability to do so is entirely within your control. You get to decide what foods you eat, what foods you keep in your cupboards. You also get to decide how to prepare them. Will you prepare them healthy, or not so healthy? Living a healthy lifestyle is within your control, and the following is a list of bad foods to avoid which will help you obtain this lifestyle.

Bad Food to Avoid #1 Monosodium Glutamate

Read the content label on every package of food you buy from the store. If anything has this chemical in it, leave it on the shelf. You might also have heard this chemical called MSG. It can be detrimental to a healthy lifestyle because it tricks the brain into not feeling full. Thus, prompting you to eat more than you should.

Bad Food to Avoid #2 High Fructose Corn Syrup

For some people, this is the reason why they struggle to stay on a diet, especially if their former lifestyle included them ingesting a high content of this garbage. The reason it is difficult for people like this to stick to their diet is because high fructose corn syrup is addicting.

Bad Food to Avoid #3 Hydrogenated Oil

This type of oil contains Trans fats, which are known to cause heart disease, weight gain, high cholesterol, and numerous other medical problems. The quickest way to have a coronary is to eat foods high in Trans fats on a regular basis. If you have trouble doing this, then just picture how unattractive you’ll look after having such a major surgery to repair this problem.

Bad Food to Avoid #4 Sugar

Sugar is packed full of chemicals to help refine it into the substance it is once it finally reaches the grocery store. You should try to avoid it at all cost if possible. It doesn’t serve any other purpose than to turn to fat and become a bulge around your thighs and belly.

Bad Food to Avoid #5 Enriched White Flour

The word enriched doesn’t mean that healthy additives have been mixed in. It’s quite the opposite. There is absolutely no nutritional value whatsoever in this food. If your mother never let you eat white bread growing up, this is why. It is one of the main ingredients.

One of the best ways to make sure you’re buying healthy food when grocery shopping is to look at the contents on the outside of the package. If there is anything listed on it which you cannot pronounce, generally scientific words, put it back on the shelf and move along. That is, do this if you’re serious about living a long and healthy life, and looking good while doing so.
